Making hybrid vehicle engines more efficient

Project to make a hybrid engine more efficient without compromising on battery performance

Challenge

To reduce CO2 emissions, car makers are constantly looking for ways to make vehicles more fuel efficient. Hybrid drivetrains could be a major step in this direction.

Project objectives:

  • Determine the optimal hybrid engine management strategies for a specific route
  • Work within electric battery management constraints to preserve long-term battery performance

The project

The method developed by Probayes leveraged both machine learning and combinatorial optimization. Driving logs are used to teach and constantly improve the hybrid drivetrain management system.

The solution can not only learn, but also predict driving habits and road segments at different scales.

Switching between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor is optimized based on these predictions, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Results

Probayes developed and implemented algorithms to determine the optimal hybrid drivetrain management strategies to reduce fuel consumption for a given journey.

The solution is 5% to 15% more fuel efficient than optimizing engine operation locally.
